When engineering a flat roof for a new construction home in Minnetonka—especially near the water on Shoreline Drive—the roofing system has to do much more than simply keep the rain out. It must provide exceptional thermal efficiency, handle heavy snow loads, and withstand the extreme temperature swings of our Minnesota climate.

Recently, the Englund Roofing team completed a residential flat roof installation tailored exactly to these local challenges. Here is a look at the materials and craftsmanship we utilized to give this new Minnetonka build a durable, weather-tight, and energy-efficient finish.

New Construction Residential Flat Roof in Minnetonka MN

Maximizing Efficiency with Dual-Layer Insulation

A flat roof is only as effective as the insulation beneath the surface. For this new build, we focused heavily on maximizing thermal resistance to ensure the home remains comfortable and efficient year-round.

  • Double-Layered Defense: We installed two new layers of 2.6-inch rigid roof insulation across the entire roof deck.
  • Built-Up Thermal Performance: By building up the insulation system and staggering the joints, we drastically reduced thermal bridging. This creates a highly insulated barrier that keeps winter heat in and summer heat out.
  • Solid Substrate: The built-up insulation also provides a perfectly smooth, rigid base essential for a pristine membrane application.

Precision Installation: 60 Mil Fully Adhered Rubber Roofing

For the primary waterproofing layer, we selected a premium 60 mil rubber roofing membrane (EPDM). Known for its durability, flexibility, and UV resistance, this material is ideal for the rigorous demands of Twin Cities weather.

  • Fully Adhered Application: Rather than using mechanical fasteners that penetrate the membrane, we fully adhered the rubber system. Gluing the membrane directly to the insulation board yields superior wind uplift resistance and results in a clean, flat, and highly secure finish.
  • Meticulous Detailing: Water intrusion almost always occurs at the most vulnerable points: the transitions. Our crews custom-flashed and meticulously detailed all roof edges, field seams, pipe penetrations, and wall transitions to guarantee a 100% waterproof seal.

Backed by the Englund Roofing Guarantee

We take pride in doing the job right the first time. Because this custom flat roof assembly was installed to our strict internal standards, we confidently backed the Shoreline Drive project with a 15-year Englund Roofing warranty.
